My focus is to offer tools from Mindfulness, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and a growing palette of other therapeutic modalities to assist my clients as they learn to trust themselves, come to understand the best practices for managing stress, and where possible, make friends with anxiety, depression and all of life’s colours that come -

whether we want them or not."

- Elaine Smookler

Elaine's therapeutic approach continues to recognize that:

  • thoughts are not facts

  • there are chemical underpinnings to our emotions that can be managed

  • there is evidence-based value in naming emotions as they arise

  • it is important to reconnect with the body using a trauma-informed approach

  • self-compassion is needed to prevent the threat mechanism from triggering

Elaine can also assist with:

  • managing career transitions

  • developing new coping strategies for various emotional situations

  • support for those going through the grieving process

  • navigating relationship difficulties

  • managing stress and burn-out

  • support for existing mood disorders

As a long-time Mindfulness practitioner, Elaine always applies creative, critical, and sometimes even comedic thinking to her therapy sessions, and she has also been trained in:

  • Reiki

  • Attunement

  • Sound Therapy

  • Buddhist Theory and Practice

  • Theatrical Clown (a practice that is often seen as a vehicle for freedom of expression, self-actualization and the expansion of imagination)

Elaine can offer one-to-one coaching in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for those interested in undertaking the 8-week program but who would prefer to take it privately.

Elaine's teaching methods adhere to the ethical and professional standards mandated by the CRPO, ensuring safe, effective, client-centred care.

Elaine was a founding faculty member at the Centre for Mindfulness Studies where she taught clinical programs including MBCT and MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). For many years Elaine also taught Mindfulness throughout the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine, and she is currently on faculty for the certificate program Mindfulness Informed End-of-Life Care, taught on-line through the University of Toronto's School of Continuing Studies.
